On the Domplein in Utrecht stands a statue of a woman with a torch made by Corinne Franzén-Heslenfeld and Wladimir de Vries (1949). It honors the Dutch Resistance fighters of World War II. On the base are the words of a Dutch poet, Jan Engelman:
Gedenk uw dooden die den goeden strijd
gestreden hebben in gerechtigheid.
Draagt voort hun vlam, zij zijn gebleven,
maar in dien gloed wordt ons nieuw leven.
It's hard to translate poetry without loosing some of the strength and meaning of the original. I do hope this translation does justice to the poet.
Remember your dead and their fair fight
that they fought in righteousness.
Carries forth their fire, they have remained,
but in that light our live becomes new.
